Real Madrid officially appointed Sergio Rodriguez as the new sporting director of its basketball division, replacing longtime executive Alberto Herreros.

The announcement came Wednesday via an official club statement, confirming the departure of Herreros after 19 years in the role.

Rodriguez, 39, moves into the front office following the conclusion of his decorated playing career. He won 17 titles across eight seasons with Real Madrid and was part of two EuroLeague championship teams.

The former EuroLeague MVP and Olympic medalist becomes the key figure in shaping the basketball team’s future as it aims to regain dominance in European competition.

Herreros exits after overseeing a golden era in Madrid basketball. During his tenure from 2005 to 2024, the club won 30 major trophies, including three EuroLeague titles and nine Spanish league championships.

In contrast, Real Madrid finished the 2024–25 EuroLeague regular season in seventh place with a 20–14 record, entering the play-in round rather than securing a top-six playoff berth.

Rodriguez, nicknamed “El Chacho,” brings deep experience on and off the court. He played in the NBA with Portland, Sacramento, New York, and Philadelphia, before returning to Europe and winning major honors with CSKA Moscow and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan.

Internationally, he earned 154 caps for Spain and won the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the EuroBasket 2015 title, and a total of six medals in international tournaments.

He was a central figure in Madrid’s last EuroLeague triumphs and served as a locker-room leader during both of his stints with the club (2010–2016 and 2022–2024).

Real Madrid emphasized his leadership and connection to the club’s values in announcing the appointment, signaling a continuation of its tradition of promoting former players into key leadership roles.
