Damian Lillard’s NBA future took a significant turn as the Milwaukee Bucks waived the veteran guard, opening the door for a possible return to the Portland Trail Blazers.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Lillard still maintains strong ties to Portland, where he owns an offseason home and has been active in the community.
Lillard’s two-year stint in Milwaukee ended as the Bucks cleared $113 million in cap space to acquire Myles Turner from the Indiana Pacers. The buyout was structured to avoid sacrificing future draft picks, giving Milwaukee more roster flexibility for upcoming seasons.
Despite recent injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon that ended his 2025 playoff run, Lillard’s individual performance remained strong. He averaged 24.9 points and 7.1 assists per game during the 2024-25 season before the injury. His recovery progress will be key to any potential new team interest.
Fischer noted that Lillard has long been considered a “Portland guy” who has helped attract and mentor players joining the Trail Blazers. He spent a good portion of recent offseasons in Portland, staying connected to the franchise and community.
The Blazers finished the 2024-25 season with a 36-46 record. Lillard’s return would likely excite fans and boost the team’s competitiveness in the Western Conference.
With Lillard’s contract situation now cleared by Milwaukee, he becomes one of the most notable available stars in the league. Reportedly, teams like the Los Angeles Lakers are interested in acquiring him.
