The Portland Trail Blazers had praised Deandre Ayton’s mentorship of rookie Donovan Clingan in public statements last season, but internal frustrations with the veteran center had been building behind the scenes.
According to reports, team officials grew increasingly disappointed with Ayton’s professionalism and consistency.
Ayton was said to be regularly late to team activities, including practices and flights, and he frequently missed scheduled rehab sessions.
Additionally, the Blazers were displeased with his demeanor when removed from games, particularly when it seemed he wasn’t putting forth full effort or responding well to coaching decisions.
With Portland now focusing on developing their young frontcourt core, which includes Clingan and 2025 draft pick Yang Hansen, the organization ultimately decided Ayton’s presence was no longer a good fit.
Rather than carry the veteran into another season, the Trail Blazers opted to negotiate a buyout.
The move not only cleared a roster spot and opened playing time for their younger players, but also reportedly saved the franchise $10 million in salary.
