A prominent insider has cast doubt on the possibility of Russell Westbrook signing with the New York Knicks. Stefan Bondy tweeted that the Knicks do not appear ready to offer Westbrook a role that would provide consistent playing time. According to Bondy, the former MVP is unlikely to accept a bench role given his playing style.
Westbrook, 35, declined his $3.4 million player option with the Denver Nuggets, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Last season, he averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game while maintaining a player efficiency rating of 14.1. Despite the production, the Nuggets have expressed some interest in retaining him.
The Knicks have been linked to Westbrook as they look to improve their backcourt depth after a 51-win campaign in 2024-25. New York struggled with injuries and limited guard rotation, especially behind their starters. However, the current roster’s structure offers no clear path for Westbrook to secure steady minutes, according to Bondy.
Westbrook’s strengths include playmaking, energy, and the ability to push tempo. Yet his shooting limitations have been well documented, which could complicate fitting him alongside New York’s improving perimeter shooters. The team’s spacing and style might not fully complement his skill set in a reduced role.
Besides the Knicks and Nuggets, the Sacramento Kings have also expressed interest in signing Westbrook. His decision will likely influence guard acquisitions around the league given his veteran experience and name recognition.
