The Los Angeles Lakers have made their offseason moves with a long-term vision centered on maximizing cap flexibility for the summer of 2027, according to a report from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

The team is strategically positioning itself to have enough salary cap space to pursue a max-level free agent that year, with superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic currently on track to hit the open market – should they choose not to sign extensions beforehand.

This forward-looking approach shaped their recent roster activity. After being unable to reach an agreement with Dorian Finney-Smith, who opted to sign a four-year deal with the Houston Rockets, the Lakers pivoted to Jake LaRavia, signing him to a more manageable two-year, $12 million contract.

The Lakers are also monitoring the upcoming free agency of Austin Reaves in 2026. Reaves, who will earn $13.9 million in 2025-26, is expected to command a significantly larger contract when he becomes a free agent.

The Lakers’ commitment to maintaining financial flexibility could shape their decisions on Reaves and other key players as they build toward their 2027 goal.
