Former MVP Russell Westbrook has surfaced as a possible free agent addition for the New York Knicks as the team looks to bolster its backcourt depth ahead of the 2025–26 season.

Westbrook, who spent last season with the Denver Nuggets, recently declined his $3.4 million player option, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The 35-year-old guard is represented by agent Jeff Schwartz and is coming off a productive year in Denver, where he averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, while posting a player efficiency rating (PER) of 14.1.

Though his role has evolved in recent seasons, Westbrook remains an explosive playmaker capable of bringing energy and pace off the bench or in a starting role when needed.

For the Knicks, Westbrook would offer a dynamic presence in the backcourt – an area that struggled with depth and injuries during the past campaign.

New York’s improved perimeter shooting could help offset Westbrook’s shooting limitations, allowing him to focus on playmaking, rebounding, and attacking the rim in lineups that space the floor effectively.

While the Knicks are now emerging as a suitor, they face competition. The Nuggets remain interested in bringing Westbrook back for another season, and the Sacramento Kings have also reportedly expressed interest.

As one of the more experienced and high-profile names on the market, Westbrook’s decision could have ripple effects for several guard-needy teams this offseason.
