Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is keeping his options open as the franchise prepares for a critical summer, according to Shams Charania, who spoke on The Stephen A. Smith Show this week.

While Antetokounmpo has not formally requested a trade, Charania reported that the two-time MVP is “open-minded” about exploring opportunities outside of Milwaukee.

The Bucks were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year, falling to the Indiana Pacers in five games. Despite a strong regular season finish at 48–34, Milwaukee’s inability to contend deep into the postseason continues to cast doubt on Antetokounmpo’s long-term commitment.

Milwaukee’s front office is approaching the offseason under the assumption that Antetokounmpo will return, using that belief to pitch prospective free agents starting July 1. However, the forward’s future remains a central variable in the team’s direction.

“Giannis is going to look around the moment he feels like they’re not competing for a championship,” Charania said, emphasizing the forward’s on-record stance regarding competitiveness.

Injuries and a limited asset base have compounded Milwaukee’s problems. Damian Lillard is expected to miss extended time next season, and the franchise possesses only one tradable first-round pick.

Charania also noted that the Bucks lack the salary ballast to pursue major trades, further constraining their ability to upgrade the roster.

Key decisions loom on free agents such as Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis. The team is also weighing the value of retaining Gary Trent Jr., whose spacing and perimeter defense could be essential if Antetokounmpo stays.

Charania previously made clear that any decision from the 30-year-old is unlikely to come before the NBA Draft on June 25. Instead, the timeline may stretch into late summer.

“His status will not be tied to the NBA draft,” Charania said. “It’s much more likely that his future plays out into July and into August.”

Though still under contract through 2027 with a player option for 2027–28, Antetokounmpo is reportedly studying other rosters and evaluating where he might fit best in a winning environment.

Milwaukee has reportedly proposed an expanded offensive role for Antetokounmpo next season, aiming to give him increased control of the ball and offensive flow.

He averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists on 60.1% shooting during the 2024–25 campaign.
