The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly showing interest in a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Minnesota Timberwolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, according to Jake Fischer and Marc Stein on Stein’s Substack.
With approximately $30 million in space below the luxury-tax threshold, Atlanta is in position to explore roster upgrades through creative cap maneuvering.
Alexander-Walker, 26, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing a two-year, $9 million deal with the Timberwolves.
The Canadian guard appeared in all 82 games for Minnesota during the 2024–25 regular season, averaging 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 38.1% from beyond the arc.
In the playoffs, he logged 20.7 minutes per game over 15 appearances, contributing 8.3 points and 2.3 assists on 34.9% shooting from deep.
Atlanta’s backcourt rotation remains fluid entering the offseason, and the team’s recent acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis suggests an aggressive retooling effort following its early postseason exit.
Porzingis joined the Hawks via a three-team trade with the Celtics and Nets, adding much-needed size and scoring to a team that ranked 22nd in defensive rating during the regular season.
Minnesota, meanwhile, faces several offseason decisions after reaching the Western Conference Finals and could leverage Alexander-Walker’s restricted rights to bring back assets in a sign-and-trade.
Alexander-Walker’s market is expected to draw attention from multiple teams seeking wing depth and shooting off the bench.
