The Phoenix Suns are closing in on a blockbuster trade involving Kevin Durant, with league insiders expecting a deal to be finalized today or tomorrow.
According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, Phoenix is “very close” to executing a trade and remains in discussions with several teams to meet its demands.
NBA insider Shams Charania recently revealed on The Pat McAfee Show that three franchises — the Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves — are “literally one or two pieces away” from completing a deal with the Suns.
Phoenix is not seeking a rebuild centered around draft picks. Instead, the team is holding firm on acquiring established players who can contribute immediately.
Durant, who averaged 26.6 points across 75 games in the 2024–25 season, has one year remaining on his contract at $54.7 million. Despite turning 37 in September, he remains one of the league’s most productive forwards.
The Suns, who missed the playoffs after finishing 11th in the West with a 36–46 record, are under pressure to reshape their roster ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25.
Houston has emerged as one of the strongest contenders. The Rockets, who finished second in the West at 52–30, possess both the young assets and salary-matching contracts that Phoenix covets.
Miami has maintained consistent interest. The Heat ended the season 37–45 and reportedly submitted offers involving veteran players and draft capital, but Phoenix is said to be underwhelmed by the proposed return.
Minnesota is also active in trade conversations, though Durant has shown no reported interest in joining the Timberwolves. The franchise remains undecided about including a core piece in any final offer.
Durant’s preferred destination is reportedly San Antonio. However, the Spurs are not expected to make a significant push, unwilling to part with high-upside players like Stephon Castle or their No. 2 pick.
Sources say Phoenix is not rushing the process but will move swiftly if one of the teams meets its price.
The trade talks come amid mounting pressure on Suns leadership to reset after an underwhelming campaign. Durant was acquired by Phoenix at the 2023 trade deadline and helped lead the team to the 2023 playoffs, but this season’s 36-win finish has led to questions about the team’s long-term direction.
