The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly monitoring Malcolm Brogdon as a potential free agent addition, according to Grant Afseth of Responsible Gaming.

Brogdon, 32, became an unrestricted free agent after completing a short stint with the Washington Wizards, where he appeared in just 24 games this past season.

In those games, the 2017 Rookie of the Year averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per contest. He shot 43.3 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free-throw line, though he struggled from deep, hitting just 28.6 percent of his three-point attempts.

His current availability comes at a time when the Mavericks are seeking backcourt depth due to Kyrie Irving’s torn ACL, which is expected to sideline the All-Star guard for most of the 2025–26 season.

Afseth reported that Dallas is expected to pursue a veteran guard capable of managing minutes while Irving recovers. Brogdon’s experience, ball-handling, and size at 6-foot-5 make him a logical candidate.

Dallas endured one of the most turbulent seasons in recent NBA history, including a blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. The team was plagued by injuries, including Davis’ extended absence and Irving’s late-season ACL tear.

Despite finishing the 2024–25 regular season 39–43 and narrowly claiming the 10th seed in the Western Conference, the Mavericks were eliminated in the second play-in game by the Memphis Grizzlies.

They missed the playoffs one year after reaching the NBA Finals.

Still, the franchise caught a break in May by winning the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, securing the top overall pick despite just a 1.8 percent chance. That selection may help reset the roster in the post-Doncic era, but the team is expected to remain active in free agency.

Brogdon, who was traded from Portland to Washington last July in a package centered around the No. 14 pick Bub Carrington and multiple future picks, brings nine seasons of NBA experience. He has played for the Bucks, Pacers, Celtics, Trail Blazers, and Wizards.
