Kevin Durant’s future remains uncertain, and one NBA analyst believes it’s time to reframe expectations around the 15-time All-Star.
Speaking on Outkick with Dan Dakich, Chris Broussard said Durant is “clearly not a number one guy,” despite his scoring talent. “He can score 25-plus points a night,” Broussard said, “but he’s not your lead guy.”
The comment comes as Durant, 36, becomes the centerpiece of offseason trade talks. Phoenix is fielding offers but remains firm in its stance, seeking impact players over draft assets.
San Antonio has reportedly emerged as Durant’s preferred destination. The Spurs, however, are reportedly unwilling to include either Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle or the No. 2 overall pick in any deal.
Broussard dismissed Miami as a fit, arguing the Heat lack the means to acquire Durant without giving up Bam Adebayo or Tyler Herro. “What’s going to be different there than in Phoenix?” he asked.
Minnesota remains active in pursuing Durant, but league sources indicate the veteran forward has no interest in joining the Timberwolves. Broussard disagrees, suggesting the pairing with Anthony Edwards could be ideal.
“Minnesota tried to get him at the trade deadline,” Broussard said. “His bond with Edwards would be good. He’s a bona fide bucket.”
Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 75 games last season. But despite his production, Phoenix missed the playoffs, finishing 36–46 and 11th in the West.
The Rockets have reportedly made a firm offer. Broussard floated a more ambitious idea for Houston — pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo instead and offering Alperen Sengun as the centerpiece.
“If I’m the Rockets, I’m pushing hard to get Giannis,” he said, noting the similarities in playstyle between Sengun and the two-time MVP.
The Suns are exploring all options, but none of the current proposals — from Miami, Minnesota, or Houston — meet their expectations. Phoenix is prioritizing win-now talent as they look to retool around Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
With the June 25 NBA Draft approaching, pressure is mounting on the Suns to act.
