Kevin Durant nearly included the New York Knicks on his list of preferred trade destinations, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

In a report published on his Substack, The Stein Line, Stein revealed that the Knicks were briefly considered by the 15-time All-Star before being removed from contention. The decision reportedly came after New York informed Durant’s camp that the franchise was not interested in acquiring him.

Durant’s current list of preferred teams includes the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs. Each has been in varying stages of contact with the Phoenix Suns, who are exploring trade options for the former MVP ahead of the June 25 NBA Draft.

The Knicks, who finished third in the Eastern Conference at 51–31, had the assets and salary flexibility to potentially enter negotiations. But the front office, led by team president Leon Rose, has instead prioritized internal development and future cap space, opting out of the Durant sweepstakes.

Durant, 36, is under contract through the 2025–26 season and averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 75 games this year. Phoenix, which missed the postseason after a 36–46 finish, is seeking to reset its roster following the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer and hiring of Jordan Ott as his replacement.

Miami remains the most aggressive suitor, with Stein reporting that the Heat are in “legitimate pursuit” and possess the pieces to construct a favorable trade package. Their sustained interest, dating back to the trade deadline, could offer leverage in ongoing discussions.

The Spurs have presented offers centered around veterans like Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, but are reportedly unwilling to part with Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle or the No. 2 pick in this month’s draft.

Houston, meanwhile, finished second in the Western Conference and owns a deep core of young players and future picks. While the Rockets have not yet submitted a formal offer, their flexibility makes them a serious contender.

Stein noted that while Durant expressed openness to joining any of his three preferred destinations, the Suns are not obligated to honor his preferences. Phoenix is expected to accept the best overall deal, regardless of location, in an effort to recoup value after surrendering significant assets to acquire him in February 2023.
