Jason Kidd and the New York Knicks reportedly share mutual interest as the Knicks begin their search for a new head coach following the departure of Tom Thibodeau.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Knicks are expected to contact the Dallas Mavericks to inquire about Kidd’s availability, despite his current position and recent success with the team.

“The way I would describe this is there’s mutual intrigue on both sides,” Windhorst said during Monday’s SportsCenter, indicating that both Kidd and the Knicks are open to the possibility of a partnership.

Kidd, who guided the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2024, signed a contract extension during that postseason run, reinforcing his value and commitment to the Dallas organization.

It remains uncertain how the Mavericks’ front office will respond to New York’s interest in their head coach, given Kidd’s recent accomplishments and new deal.

This wouldn’t be the first time Kidd has sought a change in scenery mid-contract.

In 2014, he maneuvered his way out of the Brooklyn Nets’ head coaching job to join the Milwaukee Bucks, where he played a key role in developing a young Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Kidd’s tenure in Milwaukee ended in 2018 with his dismissal, but he quickly found his way back to the sidelines, this time as an assistant under Frank Vogel with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2021, the Mavericks appointed him as their head coach to succeed Rick Carlisle, and he has since helped return Dallas to contention.

As the coaching carousel turns once again, all eyes will be on how serious the Knicks’ pursuit of Kidd becomes – and how Dallas reacts to any overtures for their Finals coach.
