Bill Simmons believes Kevin Durant may already be on his way to San Antonio.
During the June 7 episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the longtime NBA analyst said he wouldn’t be surprised if a trade between the Phoenix Suns and Spurs has already been agreed to behind the scenes.
Simmons clarified that he has no inside information, but claimed, via ClutchPoints, “I wouldn’t be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven’t announced it.”
According to Simmons, the theoretical deal could be announced during the week of the NBA Draft, which begins June 25. He suggested the Spurs would keep the No. 2 overall pick while adding Durant to a roster centered around Victor Wembanyama.
“This goes back to the Giannis thing,” Simmons said. “I think they trade for KD because it just costs less.”
Durant’s time in Phoenix appears to be over following the Suns’ 36–46 finish and first-round playoff exit. The organization is entering a transitional phase after dismissing head coach Mike Budenholzer, and league sources expect them to move the two-time champion before the draft.
Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in the 2024-25 season. At age 36, the 15-time All-Star is under contract and currently working with the Suns’ front office and his business partner Rich Kleiman to identify preferred trade destinations.
San Antonio is reportedly one of those destinations. John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports recently stated that Durant named the Spurs in private conversations as a team he’s open to joining.
The Spurs finished 34–48 but have significant draft capital and cap flexibility.
Toronto is also viewed as a serious suitor. The Raptors own high draft picks and young prospects like Scottie Barnes and Gradey Dick. They could present a strong package without dealing core pieces.
