ESPN insider Brian Windhorst expressed strong confidence that Kevin Durant will be traded by the Phoenix Suns before the next NBA season. On NBA Today, Windhorst said he is “like 98 percent sure” Durant won’t be with the Suns next year.

“Kevin Durant I’m like 98% sure he’s not going to be a Sun next year,” Windhorst said. “How it works out though, I’m about 1% sure. There’s going to be a number of teams interested but some of it is going to depend on whether they see Durant as a player they keep on a one-year contract or if they want to get him and give him a contract extension which I suspect he’s going to want.”

Durant is currently under contract with Phoenix and averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 62 games during the 2024–25 season. The Suns finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 36–46 record and missed the playoffs.

The team’s disappointing results led to the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer. Phoenix is now seeking its third head coach in three seasons amid growing questions about its roster and future.

Durant’s status has drawn increased attention due to the Suns’ internal changes and failure to secure a playoff spot. The franchise is reportedly open to moving the superstar as it looks to rebuild or reshape its lineup.

With free agency and the NBA draft approaching, the Suns could explore offers that fit their long-term plans. Teams interested in Durant may weigh the risk and reward of signing him short term versus committing to an extension.

Durant’s potential move would mark a significant shift in the Suns’ strategy after high-profile acquisitions failed to translate into playoff success. The offseason is shaping up as a critical period for the franchise.
