With the NBA’s luxury tax penalties set to become even more punishing under the new CBA, the Miami Heat front office is looking to adjust its spending, though not at the expense of long-term competitiveness.
“We have to make an adjustment,” Heat president Pat Riley said.
“It gets punitive financially. It’s not a priority, but it is in order to manage the financial part of the team. We will try to get out and then back in and reset it.”
Miami has been a tax-paying team for two straight seasons, but a “tax reset” year could offer long-term flexibility.
Riley’s comments reflect a balancing act between maintaining a competitive roster and responsibly managing payroll under harsher league penalties.
