The Golden State Warriors are now one win away from advancing to the next round of the playoffs after a dramatic 109-106 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday night. The Warriors took a 3-1 series lead, with key performances from Jimmy Butler and Brandin Podziemski leading the charge.
Head coach Steve Kerr praised both players after the game, highlighting Butler’s determination despite playing through injury. “Jimmy was just amazing. His rebound at the end was incredible—he was head and shoulders above everyone,” Kerr said. “The elevation, the force—he’s Playoff Jimmy for a reason.” Butler scored 27 points and hit five crucial free throws in the final minute to seal the win, including an important game-clinching rebound with four seconds remaining.
Podziemski also stepped up in a big way, scoring 26 points and shooting 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Kerr emphasized the maturity Podziemski showed in the game, calling him “big-time” despite being a second-year player. “He plays like a 10th-year guy. He’s got poise and confidence beyond his years,” Kerr added. The 26-point performance was a significant factor in Golden State’s success, particularly in the absence of Jonathan Kuminga, who missed the game.
The Warriors were forced to dig deep as they fought off a strong challenge from Houston, who had Alperen Sengun leading the charge with 31 points and 10 rebounds. The Rockets came within one point after a layup with 40 seconds remaining, but Fred VanVleet’s potential game-winning three missed at the buzzer. VanVleet finished with 25 points, and Amen Thompson contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, but the Warriors held on.
Golden State’s defense, led by Draymond Green, also played a pivotal role. Kerr praised Green’s defensive effort, especially considering he was playing with five fouls. “Draymond played phenomenal defense in the fourth quarter,” Kerr said. Green’s ability to withstand frustration and stay composed during physical moments was crucial in the Warriors’ victory.
Kerr also reflected on the overall growth of the team and the chemistry between Butler and his teammates. “We’ve got a great vibe here. Jimmy brings joy to the group, and he’s exactly what we needed,” he shared. “Having him alongside guys like Steph Curry and Brandin allows us to play at our best.”
Looking ahead to Game 5 in Houston, Kerr acknowledged the challenge that awaits his team. “Closeout games are always the hardest,” Kerr said. “Houston is a great team, and they’re going to be ready. We know Game 5 will be the toughest one yet.”
The Warriors shot 41.9% from the field, with 17 three-pointers, while Houston shot a higher 49.4%. However, Golden State’s composure and timely execution were enough to take a commanding lead in the series.
