A new analysis from The Action Network shows how NBA superstar Luka Doncic’s influence has expanded far beyond the basketball court—into American households.

Using Social Security Administration data from 2021 to 2023, the report highlights a 10.5% year-over-year increase in newborns named “Luka” from 2022 to 2023.

In total, 10,235 babies were named “Luka” over the past three years, making it the second-most popular NBA-associated name during the period, trailing only “Anthony.”

The Action Network spokesperson stated, “Luka’s popularity both on the court and in culture is undeniable—and now we’re seeing it reflected in baby names,” emphasizing the significance of the latest findings.

The timing coincides with major developments in Doncic’s career, notably his February trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, a move regarded as one of the most shocking in NBA history.

Since joining the Lakers, Doncic has averaged 28.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 8.1 rebounds per game, further solidifying his place among the league’s elite.

While names like “Kyrie” (5,102 babies), “Kobe” (2,868), and “Jayson” (1,525) maintain strong cultural relevance, other legendary figures such as “LeBron” (36) and “Steph” (5) have seen relatively low naming numbers.

Names like “Kareem” (1,229), “Hakeem” (537), “Giannis” (468), and “Nikola” (422) also appeared on the list, but none approached Luka’s surge in popularity.

Experts credit Doncic’s broad appeal, fueled by his charismatic style of play, international background, and now, his role on one of the NBA’s most high-profile franchises.

As Doncic continues his career in Los Angeles, industry observers predict that the “Luka” baby name trend could see even greater growth in the coming years.
