Newly hired Sacramento Kings general manager Scott Perry has made it clear that his first priority this offseason is roster reconstruction.
In an interview with Sactown Sports 1140, Perry said the team needs a traditional floor general and more frontcourt versatility to compete in the Western Conference.
“But it’s no secret: We need a true point guard with the current mixture of players,” Perry stated, via HoopsHype.
He also emphasized the need for “more length and athleticism along the front line” as part of his early evaluation of the Kings’ core.
Sacramento finished 40-42 this season and missed the playoffs after a Play-In Tournament loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Perry acknowledged that he’s still in the early stages of assessing the roster but believes there is talent worth building around.
The veteran executive previously held front-office roles with the Pistons, SuperSonics, Magic, and most recently the Knicks.
Perry replaces Monte McNair, who departed after five years in charge and was credited with acquiring Domantas Sabonis and ending the franchise’s 16-year playoff drought in 2023.
Since then, however, the Kings have struggled with consistency and direction, culminating in the midseason firing of head coach Mike Brown and the trade of De’Aaron Fox.
With Fox gone, Perry inherits a roster headlined by Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan but without a clear long-term solution at the point.
Perry confirmed that he has been “empowered to do exactly what I see fit,” whether that means a complete rebuild or targeted upgrades.
He also indicated that the next head coaching hire will be a critical step in shaping the team’s identity going forward.
Interim coach Doug Christie posted a 9-17 record after taking over midseason, and it remains unclear whether he will be retained.
The Kings’ front office will now enter a pivotal offseason with cap flexibility, a lottery pick, and multiple roster decisions on the table.
With playoff success still elusive—Sacramento has qualified just once in the past 19 seasons—Perry’s decisions in the coming months will determine the franchise’s trajectory.
