The Sacramento Kings and general manager Monte McNair have agreed to part ways after five seasons, according to a report by NBA insider Shams Charania.

McNair, who was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2023, exits after a season that ended with a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament on Wednesday night.

The split comes two years after McNair oversaw a 48-34 campaign that snapped a 16-year playoff drought, a stretch that had been the longest in NBA history at the time.

Sacramento’s 2024-25 season was marked by instability, including the midseason firing of head coach Mike Brown and a major trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs.

Doug Christie took over as interim head coach in December but went 9-17 to close the season, as the Kings fell short of expectations despite acquiring veteran scorers DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine.

In Wednesday’s defeat, the Kings were outscored 44-19 in the second quarter, losing control of a close game after Klay Thompson exploded for 16 points in the period.

Thompson finished with 23 points, while Anthony Davis added 27 points and nine rebounds to push the Mavericks into a do-or-die matchup at Memphis on Friday.

The Kings’ defense failed to contain Dallas’ perimeter attack, allowing 14 three-pointers and 29 assists while struggling to protect the paint.

DeRozan led Sacramento with 33 points, and LaVine added 20, but the Kings were unable to respond after falling into a double-digit halftime deficit at Golden 1 Center.

The loss ended Sacramento’s season and extended its streak to 18 playoff misses in the past 19 years.

McNair’s tenure included acquiring All-Star Domantas Sabonis, hiring Mike Brown, and engineering a rapid rebuild that peaked with last season’s postseason run.

However, injuries, inconsistent defense, and coaching instability derailed any progress this year, prompting another reset at the front office level.

Sacramento now enters the offseason without a permanent general manager or head coach in place, as the organization looks to recalibrate its long-term direction.
