Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly may technically have an opt-out clause in his contract for next season, but league insiders largely believe he will remain with the franchise.
A new deal to extend his tenure is expected, especially with ownership changes on the horizon.
Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who are poised to officially assume majority ownership of the Timberwolves, are reportedly inclined to maintain continuity at the top of the basketball operations department.
Their preference appears to be retaining Connelly, whose leadership has helped reshape the franchise’s direction in recent years.
Despite his strong standing in Minnesota, there is speculation that other NBA teams could express interest in poaching Connelly.
Both the Atlanta Hawks and the Denver Nuggets, where Connelly previously served as a top executive, are seen as potential suitors should he become available.
However, Minnesota appears to be the frontrunner to keep him in place.
Connelly assumed leadership of the Timberwolves’ front office in May 2022 and has since made several headline-grabbing roster moves.
Most notably, he orchestrated the blockbuster trade for Rudy Gobert in the summer of 2022, signaling the team’s ambition to contend in the Western Conference.
More recently, ahead of the 2024–25 season, Connelly pulled off another major transaction by trading longtime franchise cornerstone Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, a move that marked a bold shift in Minnesota’s team-building strategy.
