The Los Angeles Lakers have officially announced a contract extension with Rob Pelinka, reaffirming their confidence in his long-term leadership.

As part of this renewed commitment, Pelinka will also assume an elevated role within the organization, now holding the title of President of Basketball Operations in addition to his existing responsibilities.

He initially joined the Lakers front office in 2017, stepping into the role of general manager alongside franchise legend Magic Johnson, who was then named President of Basketball Operations.

Following Johnson’s unexpected departure in 2019, Pelinka transitioned into the Lakers’ top basketball executive, taking over the reins and leading all major personnel decisions.

Reflecting on the longtime agent-turned-executive’s impact and tenure, Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss shared high praise for his leadership and collaborative approach:

“For eight seasons, I have relied on Rob’s vision and leadership to do what’s best for the Lakers organization. I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and Lakers fans everywhere.”

Pelinka’s most recent moves over the past year further solidify the organization’s belief in his vision.

In a bold coaching decision, he appointed former player and analyst JJ Redick as head coach, a move that signals a forward-thinking and modern approach to team leadership.

He also executed a major blockbuster trade to acquire Luka Doncic, bringing one of the league’s brightest stars to Los Angeles and significantly reshaping the team’s championship outlook.

Before transitioning into front-office management, Pelinka was highly respected in the basketball world as a player agent, representing elite talent such as the late Kobe Bryant, James Harden, and Andre Iguodala.

His background in player representation provided a unique foundation for his executive career, equipping him with a deep understanding of both the business and competitive aspects of the NBA.
