Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka spoke about LeBron James’ future during the 2025 Media Day press conference, emphasizing the organization’s hope that the superstar ends his career in Los Angeles. Pelinka highlighted the Lakers’ intentional offseason moves, including adding Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia, as well as finalizing Luka Doncic’s contract extension.
“We were very intentional this summer in terms of the pieces we add with Luka and LeBron once LeBron opted in,” Pelinka said. “We built them a competitive team. We would love if LeBron’s story would be to retire as a Laker. That’d be a positive story.”
Pelinka also addressed roster flexibility, noting the importance of optionality in team-building under the NBA’s new CBA rules. He explained that the Lakers structured contracts and acquisitions to allow both immediate competitiveness and future maneuverability. “We feel good about the optionality. We can look at moves if they help our team after the first 20-25 games,” he added.
Head coach JJ Redick, entering his second year, reflected on the offseason’s focus on philosophy, methodology, and player development. He emphasized the daily commitment expected from the roster and noted that LeBron and Doncic have embraced the new standards. Redick highlighted the addition of veterans and young talent, including Ayton, Smart, and LaRavia, as key components to support both star players.
Pelinka also commented on conversations with LeBron about his long-term plans. “We want to give him absolute respect to choose his story,” he said. “He’s earned that right. He’s the best one to talk about how many years he wants to play.”
The Lakers’ offseason approach combined veteran leadership, strategic acquisitions, and player development. Pelinka praised the work done in training sessions, emphasizing that players like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura have shown growth and commitment during workouts. The front office and coaching staff stressed that building a championship-caliber team requires both careful planning and daily execution on the court.
