The New Orleans Pelicans are nearing the end of what is widely being considered one of the most disappointing seasons in the franchise’s history.

This downturn in performance has sparked growing speculation that changes could be on the horizon within the team’s leadership, particularly involving Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin and head coach Willie Green.

Both men have been central figures in the organization’s recent direction, and their futures with the team are now under increased scrutiny.

David Griffin assumed control of the Pelicans’ front office in April 2019, stepping into the role with a reputation for team-building and a championship pedigree from his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Since his appointment, the team has reached the playoffs twice and posted two winning records – milestones that mark some progress but fall short of the expectations that came with the franchise’s talented core, which includes All-Star forward Zion Williamson.

Willie Green, who was hired as head coach in 2021, has overseen both of those postseason berths and winning campaigns. Despite that, his overall coaching record sits at 148 wins and 179 losses over four seasons.

While Green has been praised at times for his ability to foster player relationships and maintain a strong locker room culture, questions have emerged about his in-game adjustments, rotations, and strategic decision-making – factors that have drawn criticism during the Pelicans’ recent struggles.

Compounding the uncertainty are reports of internal friction within the organization.

Tensions have reportedly surfaced over some of Griffin’s personnel moves – trades, signings, and draft decisions that have not always panned out – as well as concerns regarding Green’s allocation of playing time and player development choices.

These issues have raised doubts about the alignment between the front office and coaching staff and whether a unified vision exists for the future of the team.

Ownership, led by Gayle Benson, has not publicly clarified its stance on either Griffin or Green, leaving the direction of the franchise shrouded in ambiguity.

As the season concludes, all eyes are on the front office to see whether a major shakeup is imminent or if the current leadership will be given another chance to turn things around in what has been a frustrating era for Pelicans fans.
