The Oklahoma City Thunder are on the cusp of making history in multiple ways. With the potential to notch 70 wins this season, the Thunder are also on track to break records in point differential and net rating.
They’ve already clinched the best interconference record in NBA history, boasting an astonishing 28-1 record against Eastern Conference opponents with one matchup left to play.
But for this young and hungry Thunder squad, those impressive statistics are secondary.
For them, it’s all about securing the ultimate prize.
“We don’t care not one bit about any of those records,” said star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “They mean something, but in the grand scheme, they don’t. We’re after one thing and one thing only. That’s what’s on our mind. Everything else we don’t care about.”
In other words, while setting records is nice, it doesn’t define this team’s ambitions. Their sights are firmly set on winning the 2025 NBA championship – and nothing less will suffice.
Jalen Williams, one of the Thunder’s versatile young wings, echoed the sentiment, making it clear that all the buzz about numbers and stats is just that – noise.
“It’s cool,” Williams said. “That stat stuff is more for y’all than it is for us. That’s my only answer. Sorry.”
Even with historic milestones within reach, head coach Mark Daigneault emphasized that the focus remains inward. Every game left in the regular season is being treated as a chance to refine their identity and strengthen their execution heading into the postseason.
“We improved tonight,” Daigneault said after Saturday’s win over the Pacers. “We haven’t played small like that in a very long time. We dusted that off tonight very well. That could be something we have to go to. That’s an example.”
In short, while the Thunder’s achievements this season are undeniably remarkable, this team isn’t chasing regular-season glory – they’re preparing for something bigger.
