Seth Curry knows all too well the pressure that comes with high expectations.
Growing up with his father, Dell Curry, who played 10 seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, and his older brother, Stephen Curry, a four-time NBA champion, Seth is familiar with the weight of living up to family legacies.
He sees the same type of pressure on Bronny James, the rookie guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, who is constantly compared to his father, NBA legend LeBron James.
The spotlight on Bronny began when he showcased his skills in AAU basketball and continued through his time at Sierra Canyon High School.
After a cardiac arrest during practice at USC, Bronny’s freshman year was marked by underwhelming performance.
Despite that, he declared for the NBA Draft, and the Lakers selected him in the second round.
Seth empathizes with Bronny’s journey, acknowledging that growing up as the son of one of the greatest players ever brings its own set of challenges.
“He’s his own person,” Curry said. “He’s just working hard, trying to be the best player he can be.”
Seth, who has lived under the shadow of expectations his whole life, understands the unique struggles Bronny faces. He explains that while being LeBron’s son comes with immense pressure, it also offers advantages.
“There are some negatives and positives to it,” Seth said. “You get to ask questions, see their process, but at the same time, those expectations are always there.”
Curry believes that Bronny has dealt with these expectations from the start, not just when he entered college or was drafted, and that he is likely used to the spotlight.
Despite limited opportunities on the court and struggles with his shooting efficiency, Seth believes Bronny will improve with more playing time and confidence.
He sees the criticism as part of the journey but remains hopeful that Bronny can rise above it.
“With more reps and confidence, I’m sure he’ll be fine,” Seth concluded, emphasizing that Bronny’s potential is real, and he has a great chance to prove himself in the NBA.
