The Houston Rockets have set their sights on Kevin Durant, hoping to add the superstar forward to their roster as they push for championship contention.
NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson reported that Houston has been actively exploring ways to acquire Durant, citing the franchise’s aggressive approach to securing a marquee talent. The Rockets’ pursuit of Durant goes beyond basketball, with personal connections and coaching ties playing a significant role.
Houston head coach Ime Udoka previously worked with Durant as an assistant in Brooklyn, fostering a relationship built on mutual respect. Additionally, Rockets assistant coach Royal Ivey is one of Durant’s closest friends, with a bond extending beyond the court. These relationships could help Houston in its efforts to lure the former MVP.
The Rockets (41-28) currently sit fifth in the Western Conference and are looking for a superstar to accelerate their rise. With a strong young core, Houston believes adding Durant could turn them into immediate contenders.
However, competition for Durant’s services is expected to be fierce. Robinson reported that the Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls have also shown interest in the 14-time All-Star. The Phoenix Suns, currently 11th in the West with a 30-36 record, have struggled despite Durant’s individual success, leading to speculation about his long-term future.
Durant, who will be 37 next season, is averaging 26.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 37.1 minutes per game this season. He is in the third year of a four-year, $194 million contract, making him a potential trade candidate this summer.
Suns owner Matt Ishbia reportedly assured Durant before the trade deadline that he would not be moved, but multiple teams, including the Rockets, inquired about his availability. The Washington Wizards even offered a package centered around Kyle Kuzma and draft picks, but the Suns declined.
Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving’s future in Dallas remains uncertain, adding another layer of intrigue to Durant’s potential move. The two have been close since their time in Brooklyn, and Irving’s presence in Texas could be a factor in Durant’s next decision.
With the offseason approaching, Houston’s front office is positioning itself for a blockbuster move. Whether they can convince Durant to join remains to be seen, but their interest is undeniable.
