The Phoenix Suns could be heading for major roster changes this offseason, with Kevin Durant at the center of potential trade discussions. NBA insider Shams Charania reported on NBA Countdown that if Phoenix fails to make a deep playoff run, the organization and Durant are likely to work together on finding a trade to a contending team.

“The stakes are high unless there is a significant run here into the playoffs for the Phoenix Suns,” Charania said. “League sources believe that there will be real changes in Phoenix coming to the Suns. From a roster standpoint, that likely starts with Kevin Durant.”

Durant was caught off guard when his name surfaced in trade talks at the deadline. However, any move this offseason would be a more collaborative effort.

“If we remember, Kevin Durant was blindsided when he was involved in trade conversations,” Charania noted. “But this offseason, from my understanding, what it would look like is the Suns and Durant would work together on any potential trade to a contender in a trade scenario.”

The 36-year-old forward remains one of the league’s top scorers, averaging 26.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 36.7 minutes per game this season. His contract situation could also play a role, as he becomes extension-eligible in the summer, adding another layer of complexity to potential trade negotiations.

Phoenix has struggled to find consistency this season, currently sitting at 28-33 and 11th in the Western Conference. The Suns have lost 12 of their last 16 games and are four games behind the Dallas Mavericks for the final Play-In spot. They are also 4.5 games behind the sixth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers, making a guaranteed playoff berth still within reach.

Despite having a star trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, the Suns have underperformed in a highly competitive Western Conference. Injuries, lack of depth, and defensive issues have plagued the team, leading to growing speculation about potential offseason moves.

Charania emphasized that multiple teams could be in the mix if Durant becomes available. “I would expect four to six contending teams with some serious involvement in Durant,” he said. “He’s still playing at a really high level.”

Much will depend on how the Suns perform in the final stretch of the season and whether they can turn things around in time for a playoff push. If they fall short, a blockbuster trade involving Durant could become one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
