Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet is set for his second return this month, as he’s listed as probable to play against the Suns on Wednesday, reports Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle.
VanVleet participated in a light practice on Tuesday, as described by coach Ime Udoka.
The Rockets point guard has missed 16 of the last 17 games due to a right ankle strain.
After sitting out 11 games, he returned on March 1 against Sacramento but was limited to three points on 1-of-8 shooting while adding five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
He reinjured his ankle after stepping on a referee’s foot and missed five more games since.
VanVleet is averaging 14.4 points and 5.8 assists this season. His return is crucial, as teammate Amen Thompson is expected to miss 10-14 days with an ankle sprain.
VanVleet’s future with the Rockets will be a major offseason storyline, as Houston holds a $44.9MM option for next season.
His performance over the final stretch of the regular season and postseason could influence whether the Rockets pick up that option or pursue a longer-term deal.
