There may be significant logistical and regulatory obstacles to overcome before it becomes a reality, but Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has expressed a desire to represent Australia in the 2028 Olympics.
His potential inclusion on the Boomers’ roster has already received enthusiastic support from the Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels, according to Grant Afseth of RG.org.
Daniels made it clear that he and the Australian national team would wholeheartedly welcome Irving if the opportunity arose.
“Oh yeah, I love it. I love it,” the player said. “I know he wants to do it. We want him to come play for us. There’s a lot of stuff that has to get cleared for him to come play, but we welcome him with open arms. He’s a brother. He’s an Australian.”
Irving, who was born in Australia and holds Australian citizenship, previously competed for Team USA in international tournaments, including winning a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics.
Because of this, both USA Basketball and FIBA would need to approve a change in his national team eligibility before he could officially suit up for the Boomers.
While it remains uncertain whether the necessary approvals will be granted, Irving’s interest and Daniels’ support add an intriguing storyline to the lead-up to the 2028 Games.
