The Dallas Mavericks have suffered another significant setback this season, as center Daniel Gafford has been ruled out for at least six weeks due to a Grade 3 right MCL sprain. This injury comes shortly after the Mavs lost Anthony Davis to a groin injury, further depleting their frontcourt.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, who reported the injury, Gafford’s absence will add to the Mavericks’ growing injury woes. “Daniel Gafford has sustained a Grade 3 right MCL sprain and will miss at least 6 weeks,” Charania tweeted, citing sources close to the team. This injury will see Gafford join Davis and rookie Dereck Lively II on the sidelines, leaving Dallas thin in the paint for the remainder of the season.
Gafford, 26, has been a key contributor to the Mavs’ frontcourt this season. Averaging 12.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in 21.9 minutes, the big man’s presence will be sorely missed. His ability to protect the rim and provide scoring has been crucial for Dallas, especially as the team struggles with consistency.
With the Mavericks sitting at 30-26, currently 8th in the Western Conference, this injury puts added pressure on their already depleted roster.
The Mavericks are facing an uphill battle, especially as the second half of the season approaches. Without Gafford, they will need to dig deep to remain competitive in the loaded Western Conference. The team will also be looking to other players to step up, particularly in the frontcourt, to maintain their playoff positioning.
