The New Orleans Pelicans are expected to make roster moves before the trade deadline to get below the luxury tax threshold after losing Dejounte Murray for the season. NBA insider Michael Scotto reported that the franchise, already dealing with a difficult season, will look to shed salary following Murray’s Achilles tear.
Murray’s injury is the latest setback in a year filled with misfortune for New Orleans, which currently holds a 12-37 record, the third-worst in the NBA. His absence not only weakens the backcourt but also shifts the Pelicans’ focus from competing to financial flexibility.
According to Scotto, the team is actively exploring trade options to reduce payroll. Moving contracts before the deadline could help the Pelicans avoid paying the luxury tax in a season where they are unlikely to compete for a playoff spot.
New Orleans acquired Murray in an offseason trade, hoping he would provide stability alongside Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. Instead, his injury leaves the front office with little incentive to keep an expensive roster intact.
If New Orleans successfully dips below the tax line, it would prevent them from incurring additional financial penalties. Given their position near the bottom of the Western Conference, the front office may prioritize long-term planning over short-term competitiveness.
