Last year, officials from both the NBA and EuroLeague met to explore the possibility of a partnership, as the NBA looked to expand its influence into Europe.
The NBA was interested in collaborating with the established EuroLeague as part of its plans for a new European league, according to Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic.
However, the EuroLeague rejected the NBA’s proposal, largely because it was unwilling to surrender control over its operations.
A EuroLeague executive shared with The Athletic that the NBA essentially wanted “the heart and the head” – meaning they wanted to take over not only the operational leadership but also the strategic decision-making that drives the league.
This rejection from the EuroLeague left the NBA to reconsider its approach, potentially moving forward with its European league without the involvement of the current European basketball powerhouse.
As a result, the NBA may look for other ways to establish its presence in Europe, possibly by working with new teams or exploring fresh opportunities in major cities across the continent.
