To advance plans for a European league, the NBA would require approval from its Board of Governors. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who spoke with ownership sources, many questions remain about the league’s strategy.

Concerns stem from the fact that several other leagues operated by the NBA, such as the G League and Basketball Africa League, have struggled to achieve consistent profitability.

Windhorst reports that Commissioner Adam Silver indicated this week that the NBA is approaching a critical decision point regarding the European league.

A decision on whether to proceed further could be made after the Board of Governors convenes in a couple of months.

“We have an NBA board meeting in late March,” Silver explained. “At that time, we’ll be presenting an update to our bosses – essentially the Board of Governors – to discuss the progress we’ve made and determine the next steps.”
