The New Orleans Pelicans made a significant decision to suspend star forward Zion Williamson for one game, and NBA insider Chris Haynes offered his perspective on the move. Speaking on the Le Batard Show, Haynes suggested that the team’s frustration and fed-up attitude toward Williamson were key factors in the suspension.
“The Pelicans only suspended him for one game. That’s light,” Haynes said, via HoopsHype. “Teams don’t like putting their business out on Front Street, especially when it pertains to a player like Zion.”
Williamson, 24, has struggled with consistency this season, averaging a career-low 21.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Injuries have plagued his season, with the forward appearing in only nine of New Orleans’ first 41 games. The Pelicans have struggled as a result, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with a dismal 9-32 record.
The suspension followed multiple incidents, including Williamson being late for practices and missing the team flight to Philadelphia. The Pelicans acted quickly, and while the suspension was only for one game, it was clear that the team had reached its breaking point with the star forward.
“They felt it was time to take action,” Haynes continued. “The fact that they came out publicly and suspended him for a game shows you how fed up and frustrated they are with his lack of professionalism.”
Williamson was asked about the suspension and commented that it was deserved, expressing intention to learn from this and grow.
