The Brooklyn Nets have long been linked with a potential trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and sources suggest that the franchise remains focused on positioning itself for such an opportunity in the future. However, it is important to note that this scenario hinges entirely on Antetokounmpo’s desire to leave the Bucks, something that has yet to manifest.

Marc Stein reported on Substack that the Nets are constantly planning for a situation where they could pursue the two-time MVP, even though there is currently no indication that Antetokounmpo intends to push for a trade. Brooklyn is aware that they would need to wait for the Bucks to even entertain the idea of parting with their superstar player.

Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 31.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game this season, is under contract with Milwaukee for three more years. His current deal includes a player option for the final season, which would give him the ability to become a free agent in 2028. However, sources maintain that the Bucks have shown no inclination to trade the 2021 NBA Finals MVP unless he requests it.

The Nets are believed to be actively monitoring the situation but are not making a move this offseason. Brooklyn’s management understands that pursuing a superstar like Antetokounmpo would require a significant amount of patience, given the contract length and the current lack of tension between the player and his team.

Brooklyn’s decision to focus on potential future trade opportunities for Antetokounmpo aligns with their long-term plans. The Nets are reportedly not locked into the idea of making a major trade this offseason but are preparing for a future where they could land a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber.
