Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal has found his name circulating in trade rumors in recent weeks, but any potential move involving the 12-year veteran is far from straightforward.
The dynamic guard’s no-trade clause, a rare provision in NBA contracts, adds a significant layer of complexity to any deal.
According to Beal’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, no conversations about waiving the clause have taken place, emphasizing the guard’s commitment to the Suns’ current season.
“There have been no discussions about trades with the Suns or any other team,” Bartelstein stated. “Bradley’s total focus is on helping the Suns turn things around.”
The player’s role with Phoenix has come under scrutiny after head coach Mike Budenholzer recently moved him to the bench.
When asked about potentially waiving his no-trade clause in light of the shift, Beal responded confidently, saying, “I hold the cards,” signaling his control over any trade scenarios.
Bartelstein confirmed that the guard has no immediate plans to waive his clause but left the door open for unique circumstances.
“Bradley’s no-trade clause remains intact, and he’s not considering giving it up,” Bartelstein said. “But if the perfect situation were to present itself, it’s something we’d discuss.”
The no-trade clause, which Beal secured in his five-year, $251 million contract signed with the Washington Wizards, stays with him as long as his current deal is in effect.
Even if a trade were to happen, Beal has the authority to approve or veto any destination, a position of leverage few NBA players enjoy.
Beal is earning $50.2 million this season, with an additional $110.8 million owed through the 2026-27 season, including a player option in the final year.
His contract, coupled with his no-trade clause, limits Phoenix’s options should they explore deals involving the three-time All-Star.
As trade rumors swirl, it’s clear that Beal’s focus remains on helping the Suns contend.
While his no-trade clause provides a measure of control, it also ensures that any potential move would need to align with the Suns’ standout’s long-term interests – a situation that may not materialize shortly.
For now, the veteran guard and the Suns appear committed to turning their season around together.
