With De’Aaron Fox sidelined on Sunday, the Kings guard Malik Monk stepped up in a big way, delivering a stellar performance that showcased his growing confidence and leadership on the court.
Monk recorded an impressive stat line, contributing 26 points, 12 assists, and four steals in a commanding effort, as reported by Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee.
His breakout performance was a testament to the trust and encouragement he’s received from interim head coach Doug Christie, who has long been a vocal advocate for Monk’s potential.
Reflecting on their relationship, Christie shared how he has consistently urged Monk to embrace his abilities and play without fear, even before taking on the head coaching role.
“Before I was sitting in this seat, we’ve had multiple conversations just about everything,” Christie explained. “I’ve always told him, ‘Believe in yourself. I believe in you. You are a tremendous, fantastic player, and play through your mistakes.’”
The coach’s faith in Monk appears to have paid off, as the young guard now seems to be thriving in a freer, more confident style of play.
“He is just about as free as I’ve ever seen him,” Christie added. “We’ll live with some of the things he does, and his greatness will continue to shine because the kid is great.”
