Jimmy Butler could return to the Miami Heat lineup following his seven-game suspension if a trade is not finalized before then. The six-time All-Star’s future with the franchise remains uncertain as Miami continues to explore trade options ahead of the NBA trade deadline.
According to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Heat will require Butler to rejoin the team and fulfill his playing duties if he is still on the roster after serving his suspension. Miami reportedly does not plan to allow Butler to remain away from the team while continuing to collect the remainder of his $48.8 million salary for the 2024-25 season.
The Heat have been actively engaging with multiple teams regarding a potential trade for Butler, with the Phoenix Suns emerging as a key suitor. However, trade talks have stalled due to salary-cap complications, as Suns guard Bradley Beal would likely need to be involved in any deal. Miami, however, is reportedly uninterested in acquiring Beal due to his no-trade clause, which further complicates negotiations.
For a trade to materialize, Phoenix may need to find a third team willing to take on Beal’s contract. Beal would also have to approve the move, adding another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.
Butler’s suspension stemmed from reported tension between him and the Heat organization. The veteran forward publicly expressed his dissatisfaction and desire to leave Miami after being benched during the fourth quarter of a recent game. Despite the drama, the Heat have yet to receive a trade offer enticing enough to part ways with their star player.
Butler, 35, is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in 30.8 minutes per game this season. His absence has been felt by the Heat, who suffered a 136-100 blowout loss to the struggling Utah Jazz in their first game without him.
For now, Miami’s season hinges on resolving the Butler saga, whether through a blockbuster trade or reintegrating the star back into their rotation.
