The Golden State Warriors remain in the mix for LeBron James, but ESPN insider Shams Charania says they are no longer viewed as the frontrunner as the four-time NBA champion evaluates his free-agent options.

Speaking about James’ market, Charania emphasized how quickly the landscape has shifted around the league.

“So much has changed. There’s fluidity that comes with it,” Charania said. “A few days ago the Sixers didn’t have Jaylen Brown so now they do. Now they have to be on the radar of LeBron James.”

Philadelphia’s roster change has altered the list of legitimate contenders, while teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat continue to be viewed as proven championship environments.

“The Cavs, the Heat, they’re two teams that are known quantities,” Charania said.

That leaves Golden State in a more uncertain position despite months of speculation linking James with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. According to Charania, the Warriors entered free agency with an ambitious vision that extended beyond simply signing James.

“The Warriors going into free agency dreamt up a grand plan of Draymond, Steph, LeBron,” Charania said. “But the big domino with them is trying to get a player like Anthony Davis to bring LeBron and AD as a package deal.”

Without Davis, however, Charania believes Golden State’s appeal has diminished.

“Short of that, they’re not really looked at as the top of this list,” he said.

James informed the Los Angeles Lakers before the start of free agency that he intends to continue playing in 2026-27 but will do so with another franchise. The decision ends an eight-year run in Los Angeles that included the 2020 NBA championship and four playoff appearances.

Even at 41 years old, James remained one of the league’s most productive players last season. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.5% from the field in 60 regular-season games. The Lakers finished 53-29, won the Pacific Division and reached the Western Conference semifinals before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

James is prioritizing championship contention rather than maximizing salary, Charania has reported, and there is no timetable for his decision. His agent, Rich Paul, has received interest from roughly a dozen teams since free agency opened, with James taking time to evaluate each situation.

Golden State has explored ways to improve its roster around Curry, Jimmy Butler and Green, while also monitoring Davis’ situation. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne recently reported the Warriors would prefer to secure a commitment from James before aggressively pursuing a trade for Davis, while Brian Windhorst said the Davis pursuit has cooled as Washington shows little urgency to move the veteran star.
