Detroit Pistons forward Tim Hardaway Jr. recently opened up about the memorable moment when he first defeated his father, former NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway, in a one-on-one basketball game. The encounter, which took place during Hardaway Jr.’s sophomore year in high school, marked a significant milestone in his career.
“Yeah, I played him one-on-one, my sophomore year I beat him,” Hardaway Jr. shared, via HoopsHype. “Went past him and then tried to go for a dunk in front of his friends, and he grabbed the back of my jersey in midair and then threw me down on the ground. After that, it was no more one-on-one.”
The story highlights a competitive father-son relationship, with Hardaway Jr. recounting how his father’s forceful response to the dunk attempt made him realize he could compete with older players. “That’s when I knew I could really compete and hoop with the older guys,” he added.
Hardaway Jr.’s first victory over his father was a pivotal moment in his basketball journey. His father, a five-time NBA All-Star, had an illustrious career, and to surpass him on the court was a testament to Hardaway Jr.’s growing skills.
