The Oklahoma City Thunder are in a unique position, holding a significant number of future draft picks that could be used to upgrade their roster in a potential trade.
This abundance of assets gives the team the flexibility to make a move if they choose to pursue win-now talent. Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports recently posed the question of whether it might be time for the Thunder to part with some of those valuable selections and turn them into immediate help for a playoff push.
One area of concern, according to O’Connor, is whether Jalen Williams, who has been projected as a complementary shot creator alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is truly ready to take on a larger role.
Williams has shown promise, but his struggles against the Milwaukee Bucks’ wings – who aren’t typically known for their defensive prowess – raise questions about his ability to consistently perform at a high level against top-tier competition.
O’Connor suggests that while Williams still has great potential, the Thunder might need to look for additional support at this stage, particularly when it comes to establishing a more reliable second option on offense.
O’Connor also advocates for the Thunder to target specific areas of need. While the team’s strong defensive capabilities and overall depth have them sitting atop the Western Conference, their offense could benefit from more shooting, especially to complement the playmaking of Gilgeous-Alexander.
The Thunder could also look to add more big men to give them better matchup flexibility, particularly when facing physically dominant teams in the postseason.
Additionally, bringing in a “microwave” bench guard – someone who can come in and provide an instant offensive spark – would help provide depth and scoring when the starters are resting or when the offense stalls.
With Oklahoma City’s impressive start to the season and their bright future, adding some immediate help could make them even more dangerous in the Western Conference.
The decision to part with some of those future assets could accelerate their timeline and help the team compete for a deeper playoff run, but it will require careful consideration of how to balance long-term growth with short-term needs.
