Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday believes former teammate Zion Williamson has untapped potential, particularly on the defensive end. Holiday, regarded as one of the NBA’s best defenders, shared his thoughts on Williamson during an appearance on Podcast P with Paul George.
“I think Zion is one of the most gifted players I’ve ever seen,” Holiday said, via ClutchPoints. “Athletic ability, how he can get to the rim by people… At least when I had him as a rookie, it was amazing; that’s just what he was capable of.”
Holiday highlighted Williamson’s offensive dominance but emphasized that improving his defense could elevate his game further. “For one, for him, I’d have him play a little more defense. That’s not a knock on him; I think that would make him the talent that he is. It would elevate his game,” Holiday explained.
Williamson, who has faced criticism for weight management and limited availability due to injuries, has been sidelined for much of the current season. The 24-year-old has appeared in just six of the New Orleans Pelicans’ 21 games, averaging 22.7 points, 8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 31 minutes per game.
Holiday praised Williamson’s offensive abilities but noted that his leadership could shine if he became a defensive force. “I think his play for other people is that he gets to the rim and gets to the free-throw line. But if he challenged himself defensively and his teammates saw that, I feel like they would follow,” Holiday added.
Williamson’s defensive metrics have often been overshadowed by his offensive production. The Pelicans’ struggles on both ends this season, compounded by Williamson’s limited availability, have raised questions about his long-term fit with the team.
Holiday, who played alongside Williamson during his rookie year in New Orleans, remains optimistic about his former teammate’s potential. “They talk about the weight gain and doing all that, but I’ve seen him at 280, 290 still above the rim,” he said.
The Pelicans currently find themselves in a challenging position in the Western Conference, dealing with injuries and inconsistent performances. Williamson’s return to full health and focus on becoming a two-way player could be pivotal for the team’s success.
