The Sacramento Kings are hopeful that DeMar DeRozan will make his return to the lineup for Sunday’s matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, according to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee.
DeRozan, who has been sidelined for the past two games due to inflammation in his lower back muscles, was a full participant in today’s practice and has been designated as probable on the team’s official injury report.
DeRozan’s availability would be a welcome boost for the Kings, who have faced a difficult start to the season. Anderson notes that DeRozan’s ongoing battle with injuries has been a significant factor in the team’s struggles to find consistency. Earlier this month, the veteran forward missed three games because of lower back tightness.
Although he returned to play in three contests, the issue flared up again on Monday, forcing him to miss additional time. Despite these setbacks, DeRozan has proven to be a vital piece of the Kings’ offensive puzzle, averaging an impressive 22.6 points per game during his inaugural season in Sacramento.
While the news on DeRozan is encouraging, the Kings may have to navigate Sunday’s game without another key player, Kevin Huerter. Anderson reports that the veteran guard was unable to participate in practice today after suffering a rolled ankle during Friday’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Huerter was forced to leave that game prematurely, and his status for Sunday is now listed as doubtful. Huerter’s absence would create a notable void in the backcourt, as he has been a steady contributor for Sacramento on both ends of the court.
With DeRozan potentially returning and Huerter’s status uncertain, the Kings are faced with a mix of optimism and concern as they look to rebound from their recent struggles.
