NBA icon Charles Barkley is once again taking aim at San Antonio, delivering a classic zinger about the city while discussing Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.
During a recent episode of Inside the NBA, Barkley joked, “You know what’s weird about Wemby? He’s like the only person in San Antonio who can’t gain weight. Hey man, I don’t understand why this the only skinny person in San Antonio.”
Barkley’s remark builds on his long history of joking about San Antonio, specifically targeting the obese women of the city, a recurring theme throughout his career as an analyst.
His latest quip adds a new twist by tying it to Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 phenom whose towering, lean frame has made him one of the most talked-about young players in the league.
Wembanyama, who was crowned the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year, has lived up to the hype in his sophomore season. The French standout is averaging 23.6 points, 10 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game, solidifying his place as the cornerstone of the Spurs’ rebuild.
San Antonio fans are well-accustomed to Barkley’s decades-long ribbing. Barkley’s jabs about “fat women in San Antonio” have become a staple of his broadcasting persona, though they have also sparked occasional backlash. Despite this, the Hall of Famer has continued to use the topic for comedic effect.
