The Golden State Warriors were elated with how seamlessly guard De’Anthony Melton integrated into their system after signing him as a free agent this past summer.
Unfortunately, their plans hit a major snag when Melton suffered a partially torn ACL, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. As a result, the Warriors are now expected to explore trade opportunities involving the veteran guard.
Melton had inked a one-year deal worth $12.8 million during the offseason, making his contract a valuable trade asset. The Warriors could leverage his salary to facilitate a deal that helps strengthen their roster for another deep playoff run.
With Stephen Curry and Draymond Green anchoring the team, Golden State is intent on maximizing their championship window, and trading Melton could provide the flexibility to bring in a significant contributor to bolster their lineup.
Because Melton’s deal is only for one season, the Warriors retain the option to trade him before the deadline and potentially re-sign him in the 2025 offseason. The NBA’s rules prohibit teams from re-signing players who were waived after being traded or reacquiring traded players within the same season.
However, since Melton’s contract will expire at the end of this season, he will become an unrestricted free agent, enabling Golden State to pursue him again without restriction. This scenario leaves the door open for a future reunion between the guard and the team, even if he’s moved in the short term.
Ultimately, the Warriors must weigh their options carefully. Melton’s absence is a blow to their current roster, but his expiring contract could become a crucial tool for improving their chances of another Finals appearance.
