The Los Angeles Lakers have made a new addition to their roster by signing guard Grayson Murphy.

Murphy, standing at 6’3″ and weighing 189 pounds, brings solid international experience to the Lakers, having recently played in Germany’s ProA league with the Dresden Titans during the 2023-24 season.

During his time there, Murphy started 22 of the 23 games he appeared in, showcasing his all-around skill set.

He averaged an impressive 13.8 points per game, while demonstrating his efficiency by shooting 43.3 percent from three-point range.

His contributions extended beyond scoring, as he pulled down 7.1 rebounds, dished out 4.5 assists, and led the league with 2.6 steals per game in an average of 28.4 minutes on the court.

Murphy’s impact was evident throughout the season, particularly in his ability to score consistently. He recorded double figures in 18 of his 23 games, including four performances where he scored over 20 points.

Additionally, his versatility shone through with five double-doubles, underscoring his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game.

His standout performances in Germany laid the groundwork for his opportunity with the Lakers, which was further solidified by his appearance in the team’s 2024 Summer League.

During the Summer League, Murphy made a strong impression, particularly in a game against the Chicago Bulls on July 20, where he recorded an eye-catching double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Born and raised in Tennessee, Murphy honed his skills at Belmont University, where he played from 2017 to 2022. His time at Belmont was marked by both individual accolades and team success.

Murphy played a pivotal role in leading the Bruins to four conference championships and a remarkable 104-25 overall record during his tenure.

His consistent excellence on both ends of the court earned him recognition, as he was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) First Team in each of his final three seasons.

In addition to his offensive and playmaking abilities, Murphy built a reputation as a defensive force. He was twice honored as the OVC Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, following both his junior and senior campaigns.

His knack for defense, combined with his ability to control the game’s pace and make plays for his teammates, made him one of the top players in Belmont’s storied basketball history.

With his well-rounded skill set, defensive tenacity, and international experience, Murphy is expected to bring valuable depth to the Lakers’ backcourt.

His ability to make an impact across various statistical categories, coupled with his recent performances in Europe and the Summer League, positions him as a player who could carve out a role for himself on a Lakers team looking to build on their championship aspirations.

As the 2024-25 season approaches, the Lakers are hopeful that Murphy’s hard-nosed defense, court vision, and shooting will translate well to the NBA, giving them another key piece to support their star-studded lineup.
