Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue recently delivered a concerning update regarding Kawhi Leonard’s injury status. Leonard, who has been dealing with inflammation in his right knee, is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 NBA season.

Leonard has not played in any preseason games, and Lue confirmed that the star forward experienced a setback following his participation in USA Basketball trials earlier this year. The setback has delayed his return indefinitely, casting doubt on his availability in the near future.

Lue addressed the media, saying, via Janis Carr, “I don’t see the chances of Kawhi missing the entire season, but I’m not a doctor.” While the head coach remains hopeful, Leonard’s health remains a significant concern for the Clippers as they look to improve on last season’s first-round playoff exit.

Leonard was instrumental for the Clippers during the 2023-24 season, averaging 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. However, his campaign was cut short by the same knee injury that has continued to linger. Without Leonard, the Clippers were eliminated in the first round by the Dallas Mavericks, marking a disappointing end to the season.

This latest injury news follows USA Basketball’s decision to withdraw Leonard from the 2024 U.S. Olympic team over concerns about his health. Initially selected to represent his country at the Paris Olympics, Leonard chose to prioritize his recovery, opting out after participating in a few team practices.

Leonard’s knee issues have been a recurring theme in recent years, limiting his availability during crucial moments. Despite signing a three-year, $153 million extension with the Clippers in January 2024, Leonard’s long-term health remains a focal point for the franchise. His absence puts added pressure on James Harden to carry the load while Leonard recovers.

The Clippers will need to navigate the start of the season without their star player, and Leonard’s timetable for return remains uncertain. As the team prepares for the 2024-25 campaign, the hope is that Leonard can recover fully and return to help the Clippers contend in the highly competitive Western Conference.
