Killian Hayes, a former seventh overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is looking to revitalize his career after signing with the Brooklyn Nets. The 23-year-old point guard, who spent the last few seasons with the Detroit Pistons, is now vying for a spot on the Nets’ roster during training camp.
Speaking about what attracted him to Brooklyn, Hayes emphasized the positive conversations he had with the team’s management and the promising opportunity the organization offers.
“Just talking to the GM… I came here and had a good talk, good workouts. I just feel good here,” Hayes said, as reported by Erik Slater. “I feel like it’s a good system and a good start for me because it’s kind of a rebuild, and I’m trying to rebuild myself as well.”
The French-American guard hopes to establish himself in a new environment. After an injury-plagued stint with the Pistons, Hayes believes Brooklyn offers the fresh start he needs to regain his confidence and fulfill the potential that made him a top-10 draft pick.
Hayes was selected by Detroit with high expectations, but injuries and inconsistent play limited his impact. In his rookie season, he suffered a labral tear in his hip, which sidelined him for several months. Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, Hayes struggled to secure a long-term role with the Pistons.
In February 2024, Hayes was waived by Detroit after four seasons with the team. He averaged 6.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game last season, playing an average of 24 minutes per game.
Despite his challenges in Detroit, Hayes has shown potential at various points in his career. He recorded a career-high 26 points in an April 2022 game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, along with eight assists, seven rebounds, and five steals. Additionally, Hayes has proven to be a solid defender and playmaker, posting multiple double-digit assist games throughout his time in the league.
