The Golden State Warriors are entering the 2024-25 NBA season without one of their core pieces, Klay Thompson. The sharpshooter left the Warriors in free agency, opting to join the Dallas Mavericks after 13 seasons in Golden State. His departure has not only reshaped the Warriors’ roster but also left a significant emotional impact on the team.

Draymond Green, who alongside Thompson won four NBA championships, recently shared his thoughts on the void left by his long-time teammate. He compared Thompson’s departure to a key band member leaving, shifting the dynamic of the group.

“Overall, going into the season, I’m excited,” Green said during the Warriors’ media day. “It’s a new opportunity, new challenge. With Klay leaving, things just look different. It feels different. It’s not the same thing anymore.”

Green explained that the consistency the Warriors enjoyed over the years made their success both easier and more challenging. He likened the situation to a band that eventually grows tired of playing the same tunes, leading to inevitable changes.

“For so long, it’s just been the same thing. I think with it being the same thing, it makes it even tougher to perform at a high level,” Green continued. “It’s like the drummer gets mad in the band, and the band breaks up. Not the lead singer, but one of the next guys in line, they get upset, and the band falls apart.”

Green acknowledged that while the team’s goal of chasing championships remains the same, the journey will feel different without Thompson. He also expressed how keeping the core together for over a decade was a rare accomplishment in today’s NBA.

“We did a great job of not getting bored chasing greatness,” Green noted. “We always tried to give ourselves a chance to compete at the highest level and compete for championships.”

Despite the departure of his long-time teammate, Green remains optimistic about the future. He believes that the change in team dynamics presents a unique opportunity for growth and reinvention.

“Turning the page doesn’t mean we’re still not competing for the same thing. That’s always the goal,” Green stated. “But it’s just going to look a little different now. It’s not going to look the way it’s looked for the last 13 years.”

Green admitted that adjusting to life without Thompson in the lineup will come with uncertainty, but he sees this as a chance for the team to evolve. He emphasized that in moments of uncertainty, there’s often an opportunity for the greatest growth.

“You go into it with a little uncertainty because after 12 years of something, you kind of grow accustomed to it,” Green said. “But at the same time, where there’s the most uncertainty, that’s usually the biggest opportunity for growth.”

As the Warriors prepare for the 2024-25 season, Green and the rest of the roster will have to adjust to a new reality. Thompson’s departure marks the end of an era for the Warriors, but Green believes the team still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. How the Warriors will perform in the post-Thompson era remains to be seen, but Green’s comments make it clear that they are ready to face the challenge head-on.
